Being healthy and staying fit is a necessity to lead a happy and blissful life. Over the past few years health awareness has been on the rise and people are more concerned about the food they are eating on a daily basis. The daily requirement of food intake varies from one person to another depending on their weight, gender, height, and the type of lifestyle a person leads.

Theoretically, you should negate the extra calories with some sort of physical activity to maintain a certain weight and stay healthy. On average, a person should consume 2000 to 2800 calories a day depending on their age and the amount of physical exercise they do. However, a healthy nutrition is not just about eating the right number of calories. Moreover, it is about what you are eating. As with most things in life, quality is more important than quality.

Six Major Nutrients

There are six nutrients, which should be a part of the daily diet, and the
excess or deficiency of these will cause certain abnormalities in our bodies.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates make up a major portion of many different foods. They are made up of monomers or sugar units. Depending on the number of sugar units, carbohydrates are divided into monosaccharieds, disaccharides, and polysaccharides. Foods that are primarily composed carbohydrates include noodles, bread, rice, and much more. Fiber, which is an essential part of a healthy nutrition, is also a carbohydrate. Fiber can be derived from fruits and vegetables.

Fats

Fats, or triglycerides, can be either saturated or unsaturated. Saturated fats are derived from animal sources, including butter and lard. Unsaturated fats are thought to be healthy and are obtained from vegetable oil and olive oil.

Proteins

Proteins are essential to the formation of muscle mass, hair, and skin. Proteins are made up of amino acids, which are further subdivided into essential and non-essential.Proteins can be obtained from meats, eggs, and dairy products.

Minerals

Minerals are essential for the body and can be obtained from various foods. Calcium and iodine are some of the most important minerals, which can be obtained from milk and iodized salt, respectively. Other minerals required by the body include sulfur, magnesium, chlorine, potassium, sodium, and phosphorus.

Vitamins

Vitamins are an important part of our nutrition and can be derived from fruits and vegetables. The deficiency of vitamins leads to some abnormalities like night blindness in the case of low levels of Vitamin A. However, if you can meet the daily requirements of vitamins from your diet alone, then you should consider taking exogenous multi-vitamin tablets to prevent any damage.

Water

Water is an essential part of a healthy diet and a person should consume six to eight glasses per day. However, this may vary depending on the amount, which is being lost by sweating and urinating.
